Pink Bus Service to Launch in Patna for Women’s Safety and Comfort
Patna is preparing to launch a dedicated Pink Bus Service for women, a step taken by the Bihar government to improve the safety, convenience, and comfort of female passengers. This special bus service, run by Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC), is all about making public transport easier and safer for women in Patna and other big cities in the state.
First Phase to Cover Five Key Routes in Patna
In the first phase of this initiative, the Pink Bus Service will operate on five important routes in Patna. We've picked these routes carefully so they go through busy spots that women frequent daily, like schools, hospitals, markets, and office areas. The main connecting points include Gandhi Maidan to Danapur Station, Patna AIIMS, Patna Sahib Station, and Danapur Bus Stand. These are some of the busiest corridors in the city, and the new service will help ease the daily travel issues that many women face, especially during peak hours.
Buses to Arrive in May, Service to Begin Post Summer Break
The buses are currently being manufactured and inspected in Ropar, Punjab. A BSRTC team has already visited the site for inspection. According to officials, the buses are expected to arrive in Patna by May. Once the vehicles reach the city, the permit process will be completed. The formal operation of the Pink Bus Service is likely to begin after the summer holidays, most likely in June. This timing has been planned in a way that ensures smooth integration into the existing city transport system when schools and colleges reopen.
Modern and Eco-Friendly Buses with Safety Features
Each of these modern CNG buses has been built with a cost of around ₹23 lakh. They are fully air-conditioned, equipped with security features like CCTV cameras, and are designed to provide a safe and comfortable experience for female passengers. The Bihar government is also taking measures to ensure proper CNG supply for the new fleet. Since all these buses run entirely on CNG, authorities are working on identifying locations for new CNG filling stations. This will help in the smooth functioning of the service without any fuel-related challenges.
20 Pink Buses to Be Launched Across Four Cities
A total of 20 pink buses are being introduced in this initial phase. Out of these, 10 buses will be deployed in Patna while the remaining 10 will be sent to Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, and Purnia. These cities have also been identified as places where women often rely heavily on public transport but lack dedicated services. By extending the reach of the Pink Bus Service beyond the capital, the government is aiming to promote safe travel for women across the state, not just in urban centers.
Female Drivers and Conductors to Lead Operations
One of the most notable features of this initiative is that these buses will be operated entirely by women staff. This includes both the drivers and conductors. The BSRTC has already started the recruitment process for these positions. As per the announcement, 25 female drivers and 250 female conductors will be appointed in the first phase. The last date to submit the application for these posts is April 30, and currently, the application process is being conducted in offline mode. This initiative not only focuses on safe travel but also creates new employment opportunities for women, encouraging more female participation in the transport sector, which has traditionally been male-dominated.
Low Fare Structure with Monthly Pass Options
In terms of fare, the government has kept the pricing very affordable to ensure that women from all income groups can benefit from this service. The ticket prices will start from just ₹6 and go up to ₹50 depending on the distance traveled. To make the service even more user-friendly, the government is also introducing monthly passes exclusively for women passengers. This will save them from the hassle of buying tickets daily and also make regular commuting more economical, especially for students and working women.
Additional Safety Measures at Bus Stops and Along Routes
The introduction of the Pink Bus Service is not just about adding a few new vehicles to the city’s roads. It is a part of a larger vision to make public spaces and public transport more inclusive, especially for women.
